Senate Marine Transport Committee chair, Kure loses return bid

The Chairman Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Hajia zaynab Kure has lost her bid to return to the upper legislative chamber.

Kure who was seeking reelection into Niger south senatorial district of the state was defeated by General Garba Mohammed of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in what looked like a landslide victory for the APC candidate.

Kure who had been in the Senate since 2007 is the wife of the former governor of the state.

The APC candidate won the Niger South senatorial District with 164,250 votes as against Zaynab Kure of PDP who polled 64,107 votes.

However, two other members of the committee were re-elected in their senatorial districts.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu of APC won the Lagos Central senatorial district as she defeated PDP candidate and former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Ade Dosunmu; Senator Kabiru Gaya of the APC retained his seat in Kano South Senatorial zone while a former Governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye, retained his seat of Plateau Central Senatorial zone.

Meanwhile, the APC candidate vying for the Bauchi South Senatorial seat, Mallam Ali Wakili, has defeated Governor Isa Yuguda of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to represent the District in the National Assembly.

Announcing the result of the election in Bauchi on Monday, the INEC Returning Officer for the Senatorial District, Dr. Shuaibu Musa, said Wakili polled 341,708 votes to defeat Yuguda, who secured 115,341 votes

Yuguda and Wakili were the only candidates that contested for the seat.

Wakili 55, a 1982 graduate of Bayero University, Kano, had served with the Bauchi State Government, before transferring his service to the Nigeria Customs Service in 1991.

While in Customs, he held command positions at Ikeja Industrial Area, Tin Can Island, Seme Area Command as well as Commandant, Kano Training School.

He retired from the Nigeria Customs Service in 2009 as Comptroller of Customs.

Bauchi South Senatorial District comprises of seven local government areas, namely Kirfi, Alkaleri, Toro,Tafawa-Balewa, Bogoro, Dass and Bauchi.
