The Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service has destroyed 917 cartons of frozen poultry products with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N5.5 million smuggled into the country.
According to the Unit’s spokesman, Jerry Attah, the contraband was intercepted on Saturday 19th and Sunday, 20th, May 2018 around 6:44pm and 2:43pm respectively along Ijora, Seven – Up axis, Lagos, by the Rapid Response Team led by Superintendent of Customs and officer in charge of the Lagos Roving team of the unit, Jack Okpabi.
Controller of the command, Comptroller Muhammed Uba, condemned the current trend in smuggling poultry products saying it is against the Federal Government policy to develop agricultural sector.
“Poultry products are prohibited by government. As such, smuggling the item has serious economic implications, as its affect local production of similar items and the agricultural sector of the economy at large. I am calling on all
Nigerians to support government policies aimed at growing agriculture,” he said.
