Four men docked for assaulting police, NPA security officers

Four men namely Ajala Mukaila (37), Akinmoladu Femi (29), Ishola Aliu (29) and Mumuni Akanji (30) were on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting three police officers and a Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) security officer in Apapa.

The defendants are facing a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy and assault.

The port prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on March 23, 2019 at about 1:45pm at Mr Biggs Junction, Apapa.

“The defendants conspire together with others at large to unlawfully assaulted Sergeant Yemi Ikudansi while performing his lawful duty at Mr Biggs Junction by giving him a fist blow on his mouth causing him to bleed,” Esebamen said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendants unlawfully inflicted bodily injury on one Onoja Anthony, an NPA security officer on duty at Mr Biggs Junction by using broken bottle to stab his left hand.

Esebamen added that the defendants unlawfully assaulted police Inspector Ahmed Idris and police Sergeant Andy Bako by slapping them on their faces.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 173 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against them.

Magistrate A.I.O Alaka granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till April 16, 2019 for mention.
