Greenview Development Nigeria Limited (GDNL), the terminal operating arm of Dangote Group and operator of Terminal E of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa on Thursday celebrated the 2014 World Safety Day with a rally.
The theme of the event was “Hazard Prevention and Control at Workplace”.
Group Head, Health and Safety Environment of the terminal, Alhaji Abduraman Zubairu, while speaking at the rally charged workers to take safety as an integral part of the work place that must be taken seriously so as to maintain a safe work environment.
He said the terminal had taken a giant step towards modernising safety measures at the terminal.
“As we celebrate the 2014 World Safety Day, I wish to tell you that in the next couple of weeks, we will see tremendous transformation as far as safety compliance is concerned because of the measures the terminal had put in place,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Group Head of Safety Policy, Usen Udoh, said that accident risk cannot be avoided but managed at the work place especially in a factory environment like GDNL.
“If we look at the environment, we realized that there are a lot of heavy machinery moving around which is a problem of itself and they are accident in the waiting to happen. So, if we do not take care, there is possibility of accident to occur here so this event is extremely important.
“We know we cannot totally eliminate all risks but can only mitigate those risks and that can be achieved by organizing a day like this where professionals take us on safety (issues).
“We can’t quantify lives that are lost at work place. Even, recent survey showed that every year about 300 people die in factory environment and those numbers are small compared to the thousands of injury that happen in work place especially in factory settings like this.
“The greatest causes of accident are very simple things such as moving truck hitting you, or falling off why sleeping, all these are very preventable accidents,” he stated.
The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to deserving staff by the Managing Director of GDNL, Alhaji Issa Bukar.
