In a move to tackle maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has joined forces with Chatham House London to bring the issue to the attention of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this month. This collaboration aims to highlight NIMASA’s progress in combating piracy and sea robbery, while also seeking international support to sustain security gains in the region.
The partnership, forged during a meeting between NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and Chatham House’s Director of the Africa Programme, Dr. Alex Vines, marks a crucial step towards developing a comprehensive position paper on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. With the involvement of international stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, this initiative seeks to transform security gains into tangible economic benefits for Nigeria, including reduced freight costs and lower war risk insurance premiums.
By engaging the UN Security Council and leveraging Chatham House’s expertise, NIMASA aims to catalyse the development of Nigeria’s Blue Economy, a strategic initiative to harness the potential of the country’s vast marine resources.
