Hong Kong port April container volumes down 12%

The Port of Hong Kong continued its slow slide into weaker volumes for the year with April figures showing an 11.7% overall drop in throughput to 1.70m teu from 1.93m teu previously.

At the main KwaiTsing terminals, throughput fell 10.5% to 1.37m teu while at the other terminals volumes fell 16.4% to 330,000 teu from 395,000 teu.

Month-on-month volumes rose 4.3% overall from 1.63m teu in March, reflecting some uptick in business. However for the year-to-date, the damage has already been done and overall throughput is down 8.9% compared to the first four months of last year.
