Importer drags Islamic cleric to court for alleged N.5m fraud

An Importer on Monday dragged an Islamic cleric, also known as an Alfa, before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly obtaining by pretense the sum of N553,000 in Apapa.

The 43-year-old cleric, identified as Alfa Sadiq Jimoh, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Fred Asu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 22, 2019 at Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant conspired with others at large to fraudulently obtained the sum of N553,000 from one Azubuke Okoro with the pretence that he would pray for him (Okoro) to recover all his money, a representation he knew to be false,” Asu said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

Magistrate M.O Olubi granted him bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties are required to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case till October 7, 2019 for mention.
