Nigeria is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in its maritime and blue economy sector under the visionary leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, according to a member of the House of Representatives, Oluwole Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State.
Oke made the assertion in a New Year 2026 congratulatory message, praising the minister’s performance and describing his tenure as a shining example of dedication, competence and selfless service to the nation at a time when Nigeria is seeking new pathways for economic diversification.
With a long Atlantic coastline, busy seaports, extensive inland waterways and abundant marine resources, the marine and blue economy sector holds immense potential for revenue generation, job creation, regional trade, food security and sustainable development.
Oyetola’s appointment as the pioneer Minister of Marine and Blue Economy in August 2023 marked a turning point, as the new ministry was given clear direction, structure and purpose under his calm but purposeful leadership.
Under Oyetola, Nigeria recorded a historic breakthrough at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council election, securing a seat for the first time in 14 years. The achievement restored the country’s influence in global maritime governance and reinforced its standing as a leading maritime nation in Africa. At home, his decisive interventions finally brought an end to the notorious Apapa gridlock that had crippled the Lagos port corridor for more than two decades, improving ease of doing business and reducing costs for port users.
The minister also secured federal approval for the modernisation and upgrading of Nigeria’s seaports, laying the foundation for more efficient, competitive and technology-driven port operations. In addition, he successfully articulated and launched Nigeria’s first-ever National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, providing a comprehensive framework for the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.
Oyetola further revived the long-stalled Regional Maritime Development Bank project, which had remained in limbo for 16 years, unlocking new opportunities for maritime financing and regional cooperation.
Against this backdrop, Oke said Oyetola’s performance reflects an unwavering commitment to public service and national development.
He lauded the former governor of Osun State for bringing the same sense of discipline, foresight and accountability that defined his years in state governance into the federal cabinet.
The lawmaker also commended Oyetola’s steady and inclusive leadership style, noting that his influence extends beyond policy implementation to strengthening party cohesion and development efforts, particularly within the All Progressives Congress in Osun State.
According to him, the impact of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is becoming increasingly evident, as reforms translate into measurable progress in maritime development, economic diversification and the sustainable management of Nigeria’s marine resources.
Oke described the minister as a source of inspiration to party members and stakeholders, adding that his calm leadership and strategic thinking continue to command respect across political and professional divides.
