A ship pilot with the Port of London Authority has been killed in an accident while boarding a ship on the River Thames.
The PLA said Thursday the incident occurred Wednesday night at about 6:10 p.m. when one of its pilots was involved in an accident while boarding the ship Sunmi in Gravesend Reach.
“Our deepest condolences are with our colleagues’ family and friends at this very difficult time. We have been in touch with the family and are offering whatever support we can,” said PLA chief executive, Robin Mortimer.
The PLA has started an investigation into the accident. The accident is also under investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, which said only that it was investigating the fatality of a pilot during transfer.
The MV Sunmi is a 4,100 dwt general cargo ship flagged in the Bahamas.
