Maltese Customs inspectors have seized more than 300kg of cocaine while inspecting a container at Malta Freeport.
The name of the ship, which was carrying the container from Ecuador to Spain and made a stop in Malta, was not disclosed.
Malta’s Customs Department said the cocaine was discovered in hold-all bags in the container supposedly containing cans of pineapple.
“It is estimated that the haul has a street value of tens of millions of euro,” the Customs Department said in a statement.
Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta, said in a tweet that the cocaine haul was the biggest in the country’s history.
“Well done to Customs and law enforcement authorities for 350kg cocaine transhipment haul, the biggest in #Malta history,” Muscat tweeted on Thursday evening.
