Senator laments huge expenses on food imports

The chairman, Senate committee on Air Force, Senator Duro Faseyi, has stressed the need for government at all levels to create a conducive atmosphere for the youths in order to encourage them to participate actively in food production.

He said it was unfortunate that Nigeria spends more on importation of food stuff than production, urging the government to adopt modern ways of food production in Nigeria as a way of fighting hunger and poverty among the people.

He stated this at a ceremony where about 250 youths were trained and empowered across Ekiti North senatorial district on Agroforestry practice as part of efforts to increase food production and enhance economy of the people.

Agroforestry is one of the ways to ensure  food security, increase Nigerian forest cover, reduce environmental problems and poverty through employment opportunities.

The three-day-training and youth empowerment programmes facilitated by the Senator was  in collaboration with the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria was held at Iludun Ekiti,  Ekiti State.
