Man in court for slapping policeman in Apapa

A 47-year-old man, Theophilus Nwachukwu was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting one Sergeant Patrick Onwukaegwu in Apapa.

Nwachukwu is facing a two-count bothering on assault.

The prosecutor, Inspector Bassey Sunday told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 29, 2018 at about 4:40pm at Industrial Road, Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant unlawfully assaulted one Sergeant Patrick Onwukaegwu while he was executing his lawful duty by holding him on his police uniform,” Sunday said.

The prosecutor added that the defendant inflicted injury on the right eye of Sergeant Onwukaegwu with slap.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 174 and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The Magistrate, A. S Okubule granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety. The surety, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till June 18, 2018 for mention.
