Man docked for assaulting police officer in Apapa

A 28-year-old man, identified as Tijani Adamu, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Apapa.

Adamu, a motorcyclist, is facing a one-count charge of assault.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyobosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 24, 2019 at about 1:30pm at Park Lane, Apapa.

“The defendant unlawfully assaulted one Sergeant Eleng Godfrey while perfroming his lawful duty and caused him body harm,” Onaiwu said.

According to her, the offence is punishable under section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

Magistrate T. Shekoni-Adeyekun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with responsible sureties each in like sum. The sureties are to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till June 11, 2019 for mention.
