Man docked for stealing phones

A man identified as Egbe Stephen (27) was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing two phones, travelling bag and wallet in Lagos.

The defendant is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Alexander Esebamen told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 23, 2019 at about 8:35pm between Mosalashi and Church Bus Stop, Kuje-Amuwo, Lagos.

“The defendant conspired together with others at large to steal the following items; one Iphone 5S valued at N75,000, one Nokia Torch phone valued at N3,500, travelling bag valued at N3,000 and a wallet containing N250. Total value of stolen items N81,750 properties of one Esogwa Ugochukwu,” Esebamen said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Magistrate A.I.O Alaka granted the defendant bail in the sum N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

One of the sureties must be a blood relative of the defendant.

She adjourned the case till April 16, 2019 for mention.
