The Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, on Tuesday flagged off the movement of containers out of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa.
With the flag-off, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said three trains of 30 wagons would be moved out of the ports daily, thereby taking some pressure off the roads.
The flag off of freight train service is coming two years after former President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the standard gauge rail service connecting the port.
On Tuesday after the flag off ceremony, a train loaded with 30 wagons took off from APM Terminals Apapa to Moniya in Ibadan, which is the terminal point of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line.
Minister Alkali said the freight train would operate on a single track temporarily pending when a radioactive scanning site belonging to the Nigeria Customs Service is removed.
The radioactive building reportedly delayed the takeoff of the freight service for about two years.
