The President of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has commended the Grimaldi Group and its subsidiary PTML terminal for naming one of the largest container-roro ship after Lagos, and for deploying the ship to Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday at a reception to celebrate the maiden call of the container-roro ship named MV Great Lagos, also commended PTML for treating its workers “humanely and with dignity”.
“I wish to categorically state here again that Mr. Ascanio Russo is a wonderful Managing Director with a human face and one of foremost employers of labour in the industry. Your blood flows with genuine intentions of fair treatment to workers’ welfare in the maritime space.
“We in the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria congratulate you over this laudable milestone achievement. Once again, we say congratulations Mr. Ascanio Russo and your management team,” Adeyanju said.
The MV Great Lagos is the second of the G5-class of ships recently launched by the Grimaldi Group and named after Nigeria’s commercial capital, which it has served for many decades.
She is a new ultramodern megaship that has been described as a marvel of modern engineering and environmental consciousness. The ship is 290 meters in length with a beam of 38 meters and deadweight of over 45,000 tonnes. It has capacity to transport 4.7 kilometres of rolling freight, 2,500 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), and 2,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
