NASC salutes NIMASA over training of dock workers

President of the National Association of Stevedoring Company (NASC), Bolaji Sunmola, last week commended the effort of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for training dock workers.

Sunmola told newsmen in Lagos that the training of dock workers by NIMASA would help to achieve effective service delivery at the port.

“We want to thank NIMASA for this. They have done one of two trainings in the recent past which we have told them is still not enough because there should be more training on capacity for dock workers in the industry.

“We have been singing to them that the issue of training should be (an) ongoing thing. It is not one thing you say you have done and you stop because you have to continue to acquire skill; the necessary skill, so that our service delivery can continually improve.

“There should be training and retraining because that is what we need. We must continue to build our capacity so that we can offer the most efficient service equal to anywhere in the world,” Sunmola stated.

The NASC president also said that remuneration of dock workers has improved, stating that “the salary is fine due to the standard negotiation of minimum standard of payment as negotiated by the union and employers and then the operators as well.”

“We are about to go for another series of negotiation or review of remuneration that has been approved by the various officials in the past,” he said.

Sunmola noted that the standard negotiation had assisted the association in checking arbitrary requests by the workers.
