‘How naval rating died in Bayelsa’

The Central Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has said that the naval rating who died on Saturday during the state assembly election in Bayelsa State was on escort duty onboard a ship at sea and did not die as a result of election-related violence or politics.

Commodore Joseph Akpan, in statement on Monday in Yenagoa, the state capital on behalf of the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saidu Garba, explained that the deceased naval rating suffered a fatal gunshot wound when the ship came under attack offshore Brass and later died in an hospital in Brass town.

He said Nigerian Navy personnel remain apolitical and will continue to adhere to their professional code of conduct.
