The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command, Lagos said it has arrested a Nigerian who arrived from Brazil with 8.8kg of cocaine.
The airport’s NDLEA Commander, Garba Ahmadu said the suspect is at the isolation centre.
“We made a seizure from a Nigerian man with 8.8kg of cocaine. He arrived the country on the last commercial flight before closure of the airport on Monday.
“Our officers were very careful because he was coming from Brazil. There are many confirmed cases in Brazil more than Nigeria. So, we kept him at the isolation centre, so as not to infect other inmates.
“He would be there for 14 days and if he has the symptoms of the pandemic, he would have started exhibiting them,” he said.
The NDLEA Commander said that the alleged drug trafficker, whose identity is yet to be made public, has been living in Brazil for 15 years. He was said to have concealed the illicit drug in form of packaged sweets.
“Anybody found with illicit drugs, whether the person has coronavirus or not, he will be arrested. We will notify Port Health officials and the suspect will be treated of the virus. Then we will seize the drugs and keep it and when the suspect is given a clean bill of health, we will re-arrest him and charge him to court,” Ahmadu warned.
