The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 77 packages of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, hidden in four vehicles at the Tin Can Island Port Complex, Lagos. The vehicles, imported from Canada, included a Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Sienna.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi announced the seizure, which occurred on August 2, 2024, during a joint examination with Nigeria Customs Service officials and other stakeholders. The seized consignments weighed 38.5 kilograms, and two suspects, Salami Sunday (34) and Lekan Atoyebi (33), were taken into custody.
Additionally, NDLEA operatives intercepted multiple consignments of illicit drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, concealed in tins of Cerelac baby food and clothing bound for the United States and United Kingdom.
At the airport, 36 parcels of strong cannabis were found hidden in six cartons of Cerelac baby food, weighing 18.50 kilograms. A freight agent, Salaudeen Abiola, was arrested, and a follow-up operation led to the arrest of the sender, Bello Folu, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The smugglers had tampered with the bottom of the Cerelac tins, filling them with the substances covered with loose quantities of infant cereal meal to avoid detection. However, vigilant NDLEA officers foiled the attempt.
