Nigeria is taking its ship registry into the digital age, with the Federal Government moving to replace paperwork and administrative delays with a 24/7 online registration system.
Under the new system, shipowners will be able to access registration services around the clock, submit applications electronically, track transactions and receive digital certificates without being tied to conventional paper-based processes.
The new platform will also allow secure, real-time tracking of ship mortgages and other registry transactions — a feature that could give banks, insurers and other financiers greater confidence and visibility when funding vessels registered under the Nigerian flag.
The platform is currently undergoing user testing, with an ongoing assessment of its functionality, security and user experience ahead of deployment.
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it would host a webinar this week to showcase the emerging digital Nigerian Ship Registry, in what could become a major turning point in the country’s bid to make its flag more competitive in global shipping.
NIMASA Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dayo Mobereola, said the automation would transform the Nigerian flag into a more accessible and globally competitive platform for shipowners.
He said the agency plans to make the Nigerian flag more accessible, responsive and attractive through technology-driven processes that conform to international standards.
