In a move to boost safety for all water users, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has successfully laid water buoys along a critical stretch of Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The buoys, installed from Gbajibo in Niger state to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara state, aim to enhance navigational safety and prevent accidents on the waterways.
According to NIWA spokesman, Suleiman Makama, a total of 16 buoys – 10 red and 6 green – were installed on the river.
These buoys serve as vital markers, indicating safe navigation channels, warning of hazards, and designating protected areas.
NIWA is a federal government agency responsible for the development and management of Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The agency’s mandate includes ensuring safety, improving navigation, and promoting economic development along the country’s waterways.
