Ofobike: Agents, not Customs, deserve 1% CISS

The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Zonal Coordinator West, John Ofobike, has said that it is greedy for the Nigeria Customs Service to lay claim to the one per cent Comprehensive Import Supervision (CISS) charge.

SHIPS & PORTS DAILY had reported that the Customs spokesperson, Wale Adeniyi, had said that the 1% CISS should be paid to the NCS since it now provides the destination inspection which the former service providers carried out.

But Ofobike, during an exclusive chat with SHIPS& PORTS DAILY on Thursday, said that even though the NCS has been efficiently handling the destination inspection service, it should not be entitled to the 1% CISS.

He said that rather than Customs, the 1% CISS should be allocated to customs agents as compensation for their efforts towards generating revenue for the government.

“Sometimes we should not be selfish. Nigeria Customs is part of us and we are part of them. It is a government parastatal. The issue of 1 % CISS should not even be talked about by Customs. It should be given to clearing agents not Customs, if government wants to be sincere. They should not be greedy. They have their salaries, allowances, bonuses and entitlements,” Ofobike stated.
