Overboard containers recovered from MSC containership, VLCC collision

Four containers have been retrieved from the Singapore waters following the collision of Panama-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Dream II and containership MSC Alexandra on August 3, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said.

From the ten empty containers that fell overboard, five landed onto the deck of Dream II and another five fell into the sea.

The four containers were recovered on Saturday, while the owner’s local Protection & Indemnity club representative of MSC Alexandra is making the necessary arrangement to retrieve the fifth container which sank in Indonesian waters.

The containership, owned by Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), is currently berthed at PSAC’s Pasir Panjang Terminal to discharge its remaining containers before proceeding to a shipyard to carry out permanent repairs.

National Iranian Tanker Co’s (NITC) Dream II is anchored in Singapore and is making preparation for repairs.

There were no injuries or oil pollution reported following the incident.

Furthermore, there is no disruption to shipping traffic in the Singapore Strait and port operation is also unaffected.

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has launched an investigation into the collision.
