Pilot falls into water, dies in ship boarding accident

 

A Turkish ship pilot has died after falling into the water during a pilot transfer operation at the Bosphorus Strait.

The accident happened on Sunday morning near the southern entrance of the waterway in Istanbul.

The pilot named Captain Oguz Kok fell while trying to board the bulk carrier New Siham. A second pilot immediately dove in after him and was able to rescue Kok, but he later died from his injuries.

The European Maritime Pilots’ Association issued a statement that it was deeply saddened by the news and called for “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the accident.

Captain Kok has been described as an experienced ship pilot who was dedicated to his profession and positive impact on the maritime community.

A ceremony for was held for the deceased on Monday.
