The police on Friday arraigned a 29-year-old man, Obinna Chukwuma, before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting and stealing the sum of N600,000 at Apapa.
Chukwuma is facing a two-count charge of assault and stealing. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Paul Ugorji, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in March 2019 at Coconut, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant stole the sum of N600,000 property of one Sunday Isaiah. On February 24, 2020 at about 5:30pm along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway by Eco Bank, the defendant unlawfully assaulted one Festus Edowonyi by using a knife to cut his left fingers which caused him grievous harm,” Ugorji said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 287 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
Magistrate L.O Kazeem granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a blood relative to the defendant.
The sureties are required to be gainfully employed and furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the matter till April 1, 2020 for mention.
