Rice supplier docked for duping businesswoman

A rice supplier, Matthew Etuk, who allegedly obtained N300,000 on the pretence of supplying one Doris Olusola 300 bags of rice, on Wednesday appeared before an Apapa Magistrate Court, Lagos.

Matthew, 60, who is facing a four-count charge of false pretence, stealing, obtaining money under false pretence and issuing a dud cheque, is a resident of Apapa in Lagos.

The Prosecutor, Augustine Ejieme told the court that the accused, who entered a not-guilty plea, committed the offences on May 15th, 2015 at Palace Road, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.

Ejieme said that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N300,000 from Doris with a promise to supply her 300 bags of rice, a representation he knew was false.

He said that the defendant did not supply the rice as promised and also issued a dud cheque when asked to refund the complainant’s money.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 409, 312, 285 and 319 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mr. T.A Babalola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 00 with two sureties in like sum. He also directed that the sureties must show proof of identity and must be gainfully employed in a reputable organization.

He adjourned the case till 18 January 2017 for mention.
