A trader, Wahab Kadiri, who allegedly failed to refund N700, 000 value of the tiles he collected from a distributor, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Kadiri, 68, a resident of No.5 Adebisi Street, Ikotun, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Michael Unah told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 30, 2015 at No.2 Oyetola Idowu Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.
He said Kadiri obtained the tiles from one distributor, Michael Kobichi, on the agreement that he would remit the money after selling the tiles.
Unah alleged that the accused sold the tiles without remitting the money, which he converted to his personal use.
According to the prosecutor, the accused has been avoiding the complainant since then.
“The complainant said the accused started avoiding him and started getting supplies from other distributors,” Unah told the court.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for offenders on conviction.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
