Truck driver in Apapa court for causing accident

A 39-year-old truck driver, Nurudeen Adebesin, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing an accident and committing traffic offences in Apapa.

Adebesin is facing a three-count charge bordering on reckless driving, causing accident and driving without driver’s licence.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyobosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 2, 2018 at about 1:30pm at Coconut bridge along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant being the driver of a Man-diesel truck with registration number EPE 173 XJ with inscription “Alhaji Jejelaiye”, drove same vehicle on the public highway in a manner which was reckless and dangerous to the public, having regard to all the circumstances of the case, including the nature, condition and use of the highway and the amount of traffic which was at the time or which might reasonably be expected to be on the highway,” Onaiwu said.

The prosecutor added that the defendant drove same vehicle in a manner which was reckless and dangerous and caused injuries to one Jidda Amber.

Onaiwu also said the defendant drove the vehicle on the public highway without driver’s lcence.

According to her, the offences are punishable under Lagos State Traffic Law, No 4 Vol. 45 (9) (1), Law of Lagos State Official Gazette 2012.

Upon the not-guilty plea by the defendant, the Magistrate, O.A Erinle, granted him bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum who must provide evidence of gainful employment.

She adjourned the case till September 27, 2018 for mention.
