The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to increase their visibilities at the jetties around the nation’s seaports to reduce insecurity challenges.

MWUN President-General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, made the call in Lagos while speaking with journalists on challenges facing the maritime sector.

“The two government agencies need to employ more hands to perform their responsibilities adequately,” he said.

Adeyanju also enjoined the Federal Government to bring back onboard ship gangway security men and tally clerks to curtail illegal activities at the port.

He said, “They should be reinstated so that illicit drugs, dangerous vessels and stowaways do not come into the country.”

The union also promised to work with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to rid of the activities of drug traffickers.
