Nigerians, in their thousands stormed the Zone A headquarters of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos on Saturday to buy seized rice being sold for N10,000 per bag by the service.

Recall that the NCS, in an effort to cushion the effects of the economic hardship facing Nigerians, on Friday started selling seized rice to vulnerable members of the public at the price of N10,000 per 25kg bag. The price is much cheaper than the average market price of N40,000 per 25kg bag.

However, as a result of poor crowd management and control, no fewer than seven people reportedly died in a stampede during the sales of the rice at Customs Zonal Office at Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos on Friday.

On Saturday, the gates to the Customs Zonal headquarters was locked after a few people were allowed entry to avoid another stampede but desperate Nigerians including women and soldiers in uniform scaled the fence of the facility to enable them purchase the commodity.
