Visa agent defrauds man of N.5m

A 45-year-old visa agent, Adebowale Adegoke, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding one Adeoye Rotimi of N550,000.
Adegoke is facing a two-count charge bordering on false pretense and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in the month of January 2018 at Total Filling Station along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant did obtained the sum of N550,000 from one Adeoye Rotimi under the pretense that he would obtain American visa for him, a representation which he knew to be false,” Bassey said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N550,000 property of one Adeoye Rotimi.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314 (3)(a) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Magistrate A.S Okubule granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

One of the sureties must be a blood relative to the defendant.

She adjourned the case till December 17, 2018 for mention.
