Woman in court for breach of peace in Apapa

A 38-year-old woman, Akeem Sherifatu, and a 25-year-old man, Yaya Sodiq, were on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing breach of peace in Apapa.

Sherifatu and Sodiq are facing a five-count charge including conspiracy, unlawful assembly, possession of offensive weapons and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyabosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on December 30, 2018 about 12:20pm at 29b, Okorogbo Street, Ajegunle, Apapa.

“The defendants conspired together to unlawfully assemble to disturb the peace of the people in Ajegunle,” Onaiwu said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendants were found armed with cutlasses and other offensive weapons in the public without authority.

Onaiwu added that the defendants took part in the fight and conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause fear to the neighborhood by fighting, throwing charms, striking the ground with cutlass and throwing bottles on passerby.

According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 409, 45, 51, 54, 44(4) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against them.

Magistrate O. S Abioye granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and furnish the court with proof of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

One of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendants.

He adjourned the case till January 21, 2019 for mention.
