The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have agreed to adopt advanced technologies to monitor and control petroleum product movement. This decision was made at a stakeholder meeting on petroleum product smuggling, convened by the National Security Adviser.
The meeting resulted in a communiqué outlining resolutions, including launching a public awareness campaign on the detrimental effects of petroleum smuggling; exploring advanced technologies for monitoring and control; implementing stricter internal controls and cooperating with agencies to identify and report smuggling activities; establishing a formal mechanism for regular feedback and review meetings and supporting Operation Whirlwind with increased budgetary allocation and community engagement. Other resolutions include strengthening penalties for smuggling and providing legal backing for anti-smuggling operations; developing a long-term strategy for combating petroleum smuggling and establishing a joint monitoring team to track progress.
The stakeholders committed to working collaboratively to eliminate petroleum smuggling and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s petroleum supply chain.
