UK ports handled 428.3 million tonnes of freight in 2025, down by less than 1% from the previous year, as strong container growth helped offset declines in bulk cargo volumes, according to the Department for Transport.
Container traffic was the standout performer, rising 10% to 66.9 million tonnes on the back of robust import demand and expanded capacity at DP World London Gateway.
The increase propelled London past Felixstowe to become the UK’s largest container port by tonnage, marking a significant shift in the country’s port rankings.
Liquid bulk volumes fell 2%, reflecting weaker crude oil movements amid changing North Sea production and refinery activity. Higher liquefied natural gas imports partly cushioned the decline, helping Milford Haven become the UK’s third busiest port by total tonnage.
Roll-on/roll-off cargo slipped 2% to 97 million tonnes, remaining the second-largest freight category, while dry bulk traffic fell 3%, extending the long-term decline in traditional commodities such as coal and iron ore.
