The Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has warned that it would be suicidal to contemplate building a national carrier from the assets of Aero Contractors and Arik airlines, both currently under the administration of the corporation.
The Managing Director of AMCON, Ahmed Kuru, gave the warning at a media forum in Lagos to clarify the 2016 financial statement of the corporation.
Kuru’s warning came on the heels of a previous denial by the federal government that it was not planning to convert Arik Air to a national carrier, contrary to speculations.
“It will be suicidal to build a national carrier from Aero and Arik airline because the problem they will face is very huge, including litigations that can last up to 10 years,” he said.
Reacting to the statement credited to the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun that some foreign investors had indicated interest in acquiring the airline, he said, “No investor will put his money on these airlines without first addressing the problems on ground.”
