Clearing agent accused of stealing N2.27m

A 45-year-old clearing agent, Ismail Adegboro, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N2,270,000 meant for clearing and delivering four vehicles at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos. 

Adegboro is facing a two-count bordering on stealing and false pretence.

The port prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between November 7, 2018 and January 16, 2019 at the Tin Can Island Port.

 “The defendant collected the sum of N2,270,000 from one Okoye Richard for clearing and delivering of Late Patrician Egbuchienu’s four vehicles and converted the money to his own personal use without the consent of the owner,” Esebamen said.

The prosecutor said the offences are punishable under sections 287(9b) and 314(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Joy Ugbomoiko granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case till June 13, 2019 for mention.
