Clearing agent dragged to court over N1.1m fraud

A 29-year-old clearing agent, identified as Anthony Celestine, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding an importer of N1,105,800.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Friday Inedu told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 30, 2017 at about 2pm at Warehouse Road, Apapa.

Inedu said the defendant stole N1,105,800 property of Fouani Nigeria Limited.

According to him, the offence contravened Sections 287(7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

However, the Celestine pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge brought against him.

Magistrate Temitope Babalola granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

He said sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must be working in reputable organisations.

He adjourned the case till February 5, 2018 for mention.
