The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has warned aggrieved persons or groups against any attempt to shut down port operation in the country.
General Manager of NPA Western Pots, Chief Michael Ajayi, during a recent interview with SHIPS & PORTS DAILY said, “Shutting down the port is a criminal offence in the first instance.”
Speaking against the backdrop of the recently conducted truck registration exercise carried out by NPA, the General Manager said aggrieved persons should utilise available channels to vent their grievances as NPA would no longer tolerate any act that could lead to a closure of critical national asset such as the seaport.
He said, “You close down the port, you close down the economy of the nation. It is an act of sabotage, it is even treasonable.”
Ajayi said the objective of the truck registration exercise recently carried out by NPA was to ensure public safety in line with the directive of the NPA Managing Director, Mallam Habib Abdullahi.
He warned that NPA would no longer tolerate the shutting down of port operation by any group under any guise.
