Man assaults police officer in Diamond Bank


A 30-year-old man, identified as Usman Muhammed, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Apapa.

Muhammed is facing a two-count charge bordering on assault and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyobosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 3, 2018 at about 10am at Dillon Street, Kirikiri, Apapa.

“The defendant unlawfully assaulted one Sergeant Yese Terzumpwe, a mobile police attached to Diamond Bank Plc Kirikiri branch by giving him fist blow on his face and tore his official uniform while discharging his lawful duty,” Onaiwu said.

The prosecutor added that the defendant conducted himself in a disorderly manner by shouting and preventing customers of Diamond Bank Plc Kirikiri branch from gaining entrance into the banking hall.

According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 174 and 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Magistrate O.S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties who must be gainfully employed.

According to the Magistrate, one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant.

He adjourned the case till September 24, 2018 for mention.
