A 30-year-old man, identified as Chinedu Ncheje, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly extorting N30,000 from a truck driver in Apapa.
Ncheje is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, extortion and breach of peace.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyobosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on January 2, 2019 at about 10am at Kirikiri Town, Apapa.
“The defendant conspired with others at large to unlawfully assault one Enumah Chidi by slapping him on his face, hanging him upside down via torturing,” Onaiwu said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole and forcefully extort the sum of N30,000 belonging to one Enumah Chidi.
Onaiwu added that the defendant conducted himself in a disorderly manner by using unknown Prison Armed Squad staff to torture Enumah Chidi.
According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 172 and 56 (1a & 2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
Magistrate O.S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till March 20, 2019 for mention.
