A 56-year-old man, Chidozie Arinze, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N10,830,000 meant for acquiring USD30,000 in Lagos.
Arinze is facing a three-count charge of false pretence, stealing and attempt to harm.
The prosecutor, Inspector Olugbenga Salami, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 21, 2019 at about 10am at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N10,830,000 from one Eugene Eze Okonkwo with the pretence to convert it USD30,000 and pay same into his account. Instead he (Arinze) converted the money to his personal use,” Salami said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant, on June 28, 2019 at about 5pm, violently chased one Eugene Eze Okonkwo and one other with a cutlass with intent to harm them.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314, 287 and 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
Magistrate A.O Erinle granted him bail in the sum of one million naira with two reliable sureties each in like sum.
The sureties are required to be gainfully employed and furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case till August 14, 2019 for mention.
