A 57-year-old importer identified as Ikechukwu Nwanyaku was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly illegally converting the sum of $5,000 and N52,000 to his own use and also assaulted one Paul Okoye.
Nwanyaku is facing a three-count charge of assault and fraud.
The prosecutor, Inspector Julius Babatope, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 21, 2019 at about 6:20pm at Onireke extension, opposite Military Cantonment, Ojo, Lagos.
“The defendant attacked one Paul Okoye with intent to compel action. He unlawfully inflicted open wound on the left eye of one Okoye and also hit him with rod at his right hand,” Babatope said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant unlawfully and dishonestly converted the sum of $5,000 and the sum of N52,000 to his own use being property of Okoye.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 254, 246 and 280 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the first and second count charges and pleaded not guilty to the third count charge against him.
Magistrate Enitan Ojudun granted him N50,000 bail with one surety in like sum.
The surety is required to furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the matter till August 27, 2019 for mention.
