The Tin Can Island Port Area Command of the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 521.95kg of Cannabis indica with a street value of N1.774 billion from January to June 2023.
The high concentrations of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) in Cannabis provide euphoric effects making it popular for use as a recreational drug, alternative medicine, and a clinical research drug.
NDLEA Tin Can Area Commander, Mohammed Aminu Abubakar, who disclosed this to SHIPS & PORTS, said the seizure represents 36.52% increase over the seizure for the corresponding period of 2022.
He said the command also intercepted “colorado”, which is the street lingo for synthetic cannabinoids. It is popular as a cocktail of psychotropic drugs commonly used by many Nigerians, especially the youths.
Abubakar said the NDLEA Tin Can Island Port Area Command has “done remarkably well on the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign”, aimed at raising awareness and preventing drug abuse in the society.
He said the agency remains committed to combating drug abuse by employing a multifaceted approach including education, prevention, rehabilitation and law enforcement strategies.
