The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has issued an internal memo urging its senior workers who have less than five years of service left to embrace its “voluntary lump sum retirement scheme”.

The scheme, which is part of the agency’s condition of service, is for staff on grade levels 15 to 17 with less than five years in service.

The employee that opts for voluntary retirement gets 45 days salary for each completed year of service or monthly emoluments at the time of retirement multiplied by the remaining months of service before his or her due date of retirement (whichever is less), including provident fund and gratuity.

A copy of the internal memo obtained exclusively by SHIPS & PORTS titled ‘Voluntary Lump Sum Retirement Scheme’ and dated 14 December 2021, reads: “I have been directed to inform all eligible staff that the executive management has granted approval for 2022 voluntary lump sum retirement scheme to facilitate early retirement of staff for optimal productivity.

“The above gesture is enshrined in the agency’s condition of service, chapter 7.10.

“Interested staff who have not more than five years to their retirement from January 2022 are hereby notified to indicate interest and such expression of interest should get to the office of the DAHR (Director Admin & Human Resources) not later than Monday, 31st January 2022.”

SHIPS & PORTS reported exclusively on May 4 that the erstwhile spokesman of NIMASA, Philip Kyanet, opted for the early lump sum retirement while the former Director, Maritime Labour Services, Olayemi Abass, and 25 other senior staff of the agency also opted for early retirement under the scheme in June.
