No fewer than 20 suspected pirates boarded a cargo ship off the coast of Somalia and took control of the ship, a maritime security firm, Ambrey, has said.
The vessel is the latest to be targeted following a resurgence of attacks by Somali pirates in recent months.
Ambrey said the ship was a Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier heading from Mozambique to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It said there were conflicting reports about the whereabouts of the crew of the boarded ship.
According to Ambrey, the incident happened about 600 nautical miles east of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency also flagged the boarding incident and advised vessels to transit with caution.
Somali pirates had been dormant until late last year when they started attacking ships again.
