The police on Tuesday arraigned five men before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing and rioting in Apapa.
The men, Sodiq Shakiru (18), Olayiwola Adebisi (39), Alamu Babatunde (19), Okeleye Paul (18) and Tunde Oyewunmi (18), are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, rioting and stealing. They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Julius Babatope, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on February 18, 2020 in Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos.
“The defendants conspired together with others at large to unlawfully assemble at Labaka, Owodunni area of Amukoko and began to act in a disorderly manner as to disturb the peace of the entire Labaka, Owodunni, Agbamu area of Amukoko.
“The defendants stole one Nokia Spark phone valued at N65,000, cosmetics valued at N245,000 and one small Nokia phone valued at N8,000. Total value N322,200 property of one Ezeje Cletus.
“Also, the defendants stole two booking systems machine valued at N30,000, four Plasma TV valued at N148,000, two printing machine valued at N44,000. Total value N222,000 property of one Ahmed Ganiyu,” Babatope said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 45(1)(11) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
Magistrate R.E. Ojudun granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to furnish the court with proof of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the matter till March 3, 2020 for mention.
