SON moves against indiscriminate dumping of used vehicles in Nigeria

Director-General , Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), Osita Ablomoa, has tasked relevant bodies to ensure enforcement of the requisite vehicle inspection checklist prior to vehicle clearance at point of entry to reduce dumping of all manners of used cars in Nigeria.

Aboloma stated this at a 2-Day training programme on ‘Vehicle Inspection and Compliance with Standards organized by SON in Sokoto.

“The vehicle inspection and compliance to standards encompasses all types of highway vehicles both private and commercial that is aimed to improving automotive functional safety and road safety as well as air quality,” he stated.
The SON DG who was represented by Regional Coordinator North West Dauda Yakubu added that,”The accrued benefits are to safeguard the wellbeing of our people and ensure sustainable environment. ”
He said the training programme was aimed at acquainting participants with the minimum requirements for inspection and testing procedures as well as causes for rejection of motor vehicle, trailer and semi trailer in relation to their safe operations on the road.
Aboloma harped on the need for government agencies such as National Automative Design and Development Council, Vehicle Inspection Services, Federal Road Safety Corporation and Nigeria Customs Service to collaborate in ensuring compliance with the requisite standards and regulatory requirements.
In a remark at the occasion, Deputy Governor of Sokoto state, Ahmed Aliyu stated the need for Nigerians to be adequately enlightened on the dangers of using substandard spare parts, noting that it leads to vehicle failure and resultant lost of lives.

Aliyu who was represented by Director, Mechanical/Electrical in the state Ministry of Works stated the need to ensure strict adherence to standards.

The Deputy Governor lauded SON for the training programme which he noted would help in efforts to ensure compliance to standards.
