Thousands of migrants including a new-born baby have been rescued from the Mediterranean in a matter of hours this morning, it has emerged. Refugees, most of them from Eritrea, were seen jumping into the water from crowded wooden boats just 13 miles off the coast of Sabratha in war-torn Libya.
By 10am, the NGO Proactiva Open Arms had already rescued 700 migrants while early estimates suggest as many as 1,500 more were crammed onto a further ten vessels. Among those rescued was a father cradling his five-day-old son.
It comes less than 24 hours after 721 refugees were plucked from the water in the same spot.
