Truck driver accused of killing Police Inspector in Apapa

A 28-year-old truck driver, Monday Eze, was on Friday brought before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly causing the death of a Police Inspector, Mustapha Jubril in Apapa.

Eze is facing a four-count charge of manslaughter, accident, driving without driver’s licence and driving without valid documents of the truck.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on September 13, 2019 at about 7pm along Creek Road, Apapa.

“The defendant being the driver in charge of a Mack truck with registration number ASP 500 ZL did drive same vehicle in a dangerous and reckless manner to other road users and caused the death of AP/No 213920 Inspector Mustapha Jubril, attached to Mopol 22 PMF unit 282 Apapa, Lagos who was on task force duty on Trebor Junction, Apapa, Lagos, having no regards to circumstance of the case,” Bassey said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Law No 4, Section 18 Vol 45, Section 16 Vol 45, Section 22 Vol 45 and Section 24 Vol 45 of the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Magistrate Jimoh Adefioye granted him bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to furnish the court with proof of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case till October 14, 2019 for mention.
